Caddick appoints Group Head of ESG to drive forward its sustainability agenda

Developer and contractor Caddick has recently appointed Jessica Herman as its new Head of ESG and Sustainability. This marks Caddick’s commitment to protect the environment, support local communities and drive forward sustainable development and construction practices.

Jessica will lead on the delivery of Caddick’s ESG strategy, ‘Places for Life’, across all divisions of the multi-sector business. The strategy was launched publicly in 2023, and its vision is to lead in creating the best places in the country, redefining what it means to support people and the environment.

To achieve its sustainability goals, Caddick is working in close collaboration with partner organisations Moda Group and Leeds Rhinos, and is actively fostering unified core values for the benefit of stakeholders, including employees, partners, suppliers, clients and the communities it serves.

Jessica joins Caddick from sustainability consultancy JustOne UK, where she was Associate Sustainability Director, with Caddick being a key client. She worked to develop and drive strategies and implement bespoke solutions in line with environmental best practices to achieve impactful results. Jessica brings over eight years of sustainability and real estate experience to the role, having previously been Senior Sustainability Advisor at JLL, where she worked to drive forward its sustainability strategy across the UK.

Jessica has now joined the team as a full-time employee and will work closely with Caddick’s senior leaders who form part of its ESG Taskforce and lead governance of the Places for Life strategy. She will also work with colleagues across the four Places for Life working groups who are driving sustainability progress across all Caddick teams, while supporting the business’ wider purpose to create exceptional places and communities where people thrive.

The appointment complements the recent publication of the Places for Life 2023 Impact Report, which sets out Caddick’s ESG progress in its first year of implementation, focusing on three key areas: communities, environment and business. Caddick’s ambitions were translated into 22 goals to achieve by 2025 and beyond, developed through ongoing discussions with sustainability advisors, key stakeholders including the supply chain, and leaders across the business.

Caddick’s sustainability goals include ambitions to become a net zero business by 2040, support key social issues across local communities, and continue to deliver developments that set new standards for sustainability contributing to the local biodiversity and the wider circular economy. The report captures the business’ sustainability progress and key achievements, including supporting 212 apprentices, spending over £550,000 with VCSEs across the supply chain, investment into mental health campaigns and donating over £322,000 to charities.

Employee training and engagement remains a central focus as Caddick seeks to continually support all employees to improve their skills and wellbeing. To welcome new starters, the business has introduced Induction Days across Caddick, Moda Group and Leeds Rhinos, supporting an open dialogue around its sustainability efforts and ensuring that all colleagues understand the key role that ‘Places for Life’ plays across each organisation.

Myles Hartley, Managing Director and ESG Lead at Caddick, said: “We’re delighted to have Jessica join our team and lead our ESG agenda towards our goals for 2025 and beyond. As one of the largest privately-owned developers in the country, we want to not only give back to the local communities of today, but to also invest in the future generations by creating welcoming and sustainable places.

“Our Places for Life vision is about fostering collaboration across all Caddick businesses, engaging our colleagues, partners, clients and residents in meaningful conversations to build a more inclusive, equal, and sustainable future. With her expertise and broad experience, Jessica will be able to lead our ESG ambitions brilliantly.”

Jessica Herman, Head of ESG and Sustainability at Caddick, added: “I’m thrilled to be joining the Caddick team during this exciting time of growth and innovation across the business. This newly created role will be a great opportunity to spearhead the Places for Life vision and support our wider purpose, while empowering our colleagues, communities and wider stakeholders to help achieve a positive impact at every stage. I’m looking forward to leading our ESG ambitions as part of the inclusive and progressive Caddick workforce.”

Caddick and Schneider Electric Announce £42 Million Scarborough Deal

  • New facility at Scarborough Business Park, managed by Caddick, will champion sustainable development
  • The 16,500 sqm building will house a fully electric, decarbonised paint line, state-of-the-art solar energy system and an EV charging infrastructure
  • Over 200 jobs will be added across manufacturing, engineering and supply chain

Following a deal with Caddick, Schneider Electric,  the leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, will invest approximately £42 million in a new facility in Scarborough as part of its drive to expand operations in the North of England. Operations will move to the new facility located at Scarborough Business Park, less than 500m from Schneider Electric’s existing premises. The business expects to create over 200 manufacturing, engineering and supply chain jobs over the next decade, adding to its current workforce of 350 employees in Scarborough.

Due to be completed by early 2025, the 179,972 sq ft building will be almost three times the size of the current one, and will accommodate growth driven by rising demand from the energy transition and electric vehicle (EV) market. Schneider Electric will be the anchor tenant at Scarborough Business Park, which will be managed by principal contractor Caddick, in a joint commitment to support the UK’s move to decarbonisation and boost the local green economy.

More than 200 jobs will be created to meet the increased demand for electrical equipment to drive the UK’s move to cleaner energy including renewable energy sources, electric vehicles, and intelligent, energy-efficient buildings.

The site, which is almost triple the size of Schneider Electric’s existing Scarborough facility, is a blueprint for sustainable design and operations in the manufacturing industry. It is poised to become a net-zero plant and will use modern technology to reduce energy waste and maximise the use of renewable energy. It is expected to be net-zero in Scope 1 and 2 emissions when it opens in early 2025.

  • 30% of the facility’s energy will be produced by a state-of-the art solar energy system, with solar panels covering 50% of the roof, to ensure the building harnesses solar energy efficiently
  • Any energy consumed on site from the national grid will be “renewable certified”
  • An intelligent Building Management System, based on Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure platform, will ensure energy-efficient operations including light sensors, automated heating and cooling
  • It will feature one of the first fully electric paint lines in Europe to support decarbonised operations
  • It is targeting a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, setting it apart in terms of sustainable construction standards

The site is designed to be environmentally friendly, with sustainable transport options for employees.

    • Employees will have access to 30 EV chargers on site
    • There will be dedicated cycling racks, shelters, and showers on site for bike riders
    • Work is underway with Natural England to create a habitat for protected species

    • It will promote biodiversity by retaining as many of the existing trees and natural features as possible

Scarborough is a long-established manufacturing base for Schneider Electric, currently employing 450 people. It specialises in the manufacture of low-voltage switchgears which protect and distribute electricity and are crucial to the rollout of sustainable and energy-efficient operations such as EV charging infrastructure and net-zero buildings.

Alistair Smith, Director at Caddick Developments, said: “As a long-standing Yorkshire business with sustainability at its heart, we are delighted with this outcome. Scarborough Business Park further bolsters our strong track record of delivering industrial projects throughout the UK as we seek to build developments that support people, community and planet. Schneider Electric’s expansion will deliver much-needed jobs for Scarborough and its commitment to the net zero agenda will ensure that this facility operates as a gold standard for sustainable growth and energy efficiency.”

Caddick hosts newly elected York and North Yorkshire Mayor at UKREiiF 2024

We were delighted to host the ‘Meet the Mayor Breakfast’ event last Wednesday, with newly elected Mayor of York and North Yorkshire – David Skaith. This formed as part of an extensive programme of events at UKREiiF 2024 in our Caddick + Moda Places for Life pavilion.

David Skaith, who became the region’s first elected Mayor on May 3 was addressing an invited audience of real estate professionals, developers and representatives of local authorities and said investing in affordable homes and public transport would connect a skilled workforce with the region’s unique business sectors, in-turn attracting inward investment.

“We are a new authority and we want to listen. We need an open-door in terms of engagement with the private sector and we can build a long-term conversation from there.

“I’m also fortunate to have a fantastic working relationship with both City of York Council and North Yorkshire Council. They’ve put politics aside in the interest of the region and that’s something investors really want to see.”

Mr Skaith also said he would establish a regular investment forum, intended to link developers and the private sector with the Mayor and York and North Yorkshire’s planning authorities.

Speaking of a ‘shared vision’ between urban, rural and coastal regions across York and North Yorkshire, Mr Skaith said: “I see huge opportunity. We need to stand out and we need to shout about our combined strengths. Big cities don’t have, and never can have, what we’ve got. Together we can build something brilliant.”

Johnny Caddick, said: “It was a pleasure to host David Skaith in our Places for Life pavilion this morning, and to hear more about his plans to generate inward investment through considered partnership working across York and North Yorkshire.

As a developer and investor with a lot of exciting projects coming forward in the region, we’re particularly looking forward to the launch of the Investor Forum, and to working closely together to further boost the region’s reputation on a national and global scale.”

WE’VE RECEIVED UNANIMOUS APPROVAL FOR SOUTH VILLAGE

We’re delighted to have received a unanimous resolution to approve from Leeds City Council planning committee for a major, new, mixed-use neighbourhood in the South Bank of Leeds.

To mark the planning decision, the 2m sq ft scheme, previously named City One, has been rebranded as South Village. The new name reflects not only its location within one of the UK’s largest brownfield regeneration sites – South Bank, Leeds – but also the development’s design as a contemporary urban village perfectly suited for modern city living.

South Village could provide up to 1,925 homes, 650,000 sq ft of commercial space and significant landscaped areas, all centred around a curated ‘village green’ the size of a professional sports field, and accessible to both residents and local community alike.

Located just off Meadow Road, South Village has been designed to meet the highest environmental standards, improve connectivity across the south of the city, and will make a significant contribution to Leeds’ target for new housing provision within the city centre.

Positively received today by Leeds City Council’s City Plans Panel, the “exciting” scheme was praised for its potential, which would “change this part of the city altogether”. This futuristic, campus-style development will offer a range of living products for professionals, families, empty nesters and students alike.

A dynamic new place brand has also been developed to accompany the name change, which will be revealed in due course.

Lee Savage, Director at Caddick Developments, said:

“South Village will offer a revolution in city-centre living, transforming this strategically located brownfield site into an ambitious and accessible new neighbourhood. Our proposals are incredibly exciting, having been designed to provide bold, modern architecture, significant public space and enhanced connectivity between Holbeck and the city centre.

“As we work towards submission of a detailed planning application, we will continue to collaborate closely with key partners and the community to bring forward a vibrant new chapter for this part of the South Bank.”

Johnny Caddick, Caddick Group, said:

“We’re delighted to have received the resolution to approve from Leeds planning committee for this transformational new development. South Village is set to redefine contemporary urban living in Leeds, offering all the amenities of a traditional village, while being located in the heart of the city centre.

“Perfectly suited to modern patterns of living and working, South Village has been carefully designed to provide significant public realm and community space, promote active lifestyles and connectivity, and ultimately enable the creation of a dynamic, multi-generational community.”

WE’VE RECEIVED APPROVAL FOR PHASE TWO AT FARINGTON

We have secured approval to bring forward phase two of a new employment hub at Farington Park, Leyland.

Phase two, which was approved by South Ribble Borough Council, will generate more than 170 jobs once completed.

Following on from the completion and letting success of phase one, up to 1,800 jobs will now be created across the whole scheme.

We have invested more than £500,000 into improving the circular footpath and cycleway adjacent to the scheme, known as the Leyland Loop.

In addition, Farington Park has benefitted from the installation of an outdoor gym, the creation of a seven-acre ecological area featuring extensive planting, and the creation of new habitats for local wildlife.

An ESG driven site specification is in place which includes BREEAM Excellent standards, EPC A, sustainable heating, shower facilities, bike storage, drying rooms, PV enabled roofs, EV charging points and green walking routes throughout the site.

Located on land at the south of the Lancashire Business Park, the design of Farington Park Phase 2 includes four mid-box units, totalling 96,000 sq ft.

Tom Park, associate director at Caddick Developments said: “With its perfect location and high-quality design, this development is set to attract businesses regionally and nationally, and in turn provide a welcome boost to local employment, adding another dimension to our now completed Phase I scheme.”

Sam Royle, a partner at Knight Frank, added: “Having secured a letting on Phase I during construction, our attention now turns to the remaining land, and Phase 2 of Farington Park, Leyland, which we are delighted to be marketing on behalf of Caddick Developments.

“This second phase of development has been tailored to address the acute lack of mid-box supply in the locality and is in response to the continued high levels of demand we are seeing from the local and regional SME market.”

Cushman and Wakefield partner Rob Taylor said: “The strength of the location is underpinned by the 544,000 sq ft letting of Phase 1 to Victorian Plumbing and we have no doubt that Phase II will be equally as successful.

“The quality of building that Caddick Developments deliver is well-known throughout the market and this will ensure we secure early interest in the scheme. The site is within one of the region’s best business parks, providing jobs and environment improvement for the area alongside excellent transport links.”
